| Concrete Box Culvert to Replace Collapsed Metal Pipe |
| May 21, 2009 Hanson Pipe & Precast, a leader in the concrete products industry, is providing a four-barrel run of 8’x 6’ concrete box culvert to the City of Houston to help rebuild Kingwood’s River Grove Park’s access road, which recently collapsed. According to the Houston Public Works Department, the new structure is needed, “after heavy rains and rotting tin culverts allowed a stream to flow beneath the road for the ground’s collapse.” An eight-foot deep sinkhole formed on the park’s only access road, stranding more than 50 vehicles and boats. After floodwaters receded, crushed concrete provided a makeshift bridge to allow visitors to retrieve their vehicles before work begins to restore the road and make the drainage system safe and reliable. “Hanson’s Houston team heard of the city’s need and responded immediately as part of the Houston Emergency Maintenance partnership,” said Clifford Hahne, senior vice president of Hanson Building Products West. “Our durable concrete products assist our customers by providing infrastructure solutions that are structurally accurate, sustainable and ready and easy to install.” The new box culvert is replacing four 60-inch corrugated metal pipes that typically have a life expectancy of 25 years, while concrete structures are engineered to last a lifetime.
